“It is the responsibility of every single member of the School community to take both individual and collective action towards a carbon zero goal in a determined, consistent and single-minded way.”
Sarah Kerr-Dineen, Head

In recent years, we, together with our suppliers and other key stakeholders, have made significant progress in our mission to make Oundle School more sustainable. We are really proud that our continued commitment to meeting our sustainability goals has been recognised with the highest accolade of Green iiE Accreditation.

Our Environmental Management System commits us to specific carbon and environmental targets. 100% of our electricity is now supplied by suppliers using renewable energy and we are capturing effective data about our carbon footprint and energy usage across the whole estate. Common core objectives, including around climate, nature, and waste/pollution prevention have been set. All investment funds have been switched to those of a sustainable and ethical nature.

Our key objectives

  • Improve the management of material resources, maximising efficiency and minimising waste
  • Enhance energy and water use efficiency
  • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions
  • Eliminate or reduce the use of environmentally harmful substances and processes
  • Incorporate environmental considerations in investment decisions
  • Exceed relevant environmental legislation requirements where possible
  • Procure sustainable and low environmental impact goods
  • Publish environmental targets, activities and performance details
  • Raise environmental awareness throughout our School community

Our full environmental sustainability policy is available below and we look forward to working with our community to further reduce our environmental impact as we move toward Net Zero.

Our recent and ongoing projects

We are investing in several key infrastructure projects that focus on climate, nature, and waste/pollution prevention. These include:

  • The installation of new solar panels on the Patrick Engineering Centre, which has offset nearly all of the building’s energy consumption
  • An LED replacement schedule, coupled with light and movement sensors, which has resulted in a significant reduction of electricity usage
  • The introduction of monitoring and managing the carbon footprint of our menus
  • A phased roll-out of ‘smart’ meters across our estate for electricity and gas
  • An energy monitoring system trial to inform and drive behaviour change
  • A move to fully recyclable exercise books made from bagasse paper
  • A tree management strategy whereby, for every tree removed, three are planted
  • Minimisation of waste generation and disposal of waste in the most sustainable way
  • Encouragement of biodiversity and wildlife through the planting of wildflowers and a woodland management plan for Heron Rogers Wood, with support from local organisations

Pupil engagement

As part of our broader commitment to nurturing socially responsible young people, we actively encourage our pupils to recognise their role in caring for the world beyond our School. With the support of staff, pupils are empowered to take the lead in environmental initiatives, developing their sense of responsibility through a range of opportunities, including:

  • The Green Team: a self-selecting group of environmentally minded pupils
  • Green Reps in each of the Houses
  • Environmental Ambassadors in the Pupil Pastoral Forum, championing positive change in the School
  • Our Community Action programme.

Recent pupil projects include our successful Zero to Landfill initiative whereby no uniform, including sports kit, ends up in landfill. Other initiatives have seen an award that allowed them to purchase and site owl-boxes whilst another saw a petition to our local MP following an exhibition on COP28, encouraging him to vote proactively on environmental issues such as the health of the River Nene.
